Three new indirect ophthalmoscopes have been funded for Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH).

The devices, which is used to look at the back of the eye and diagnose retinal detachment, are used on immobile patients attending A&E at BEH, therefore causing as little distress as possible.

The equipment is also used across the Trust by the on-call opthalmologist to examine inpatients at Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Children's Hospital. The on-call opthalmologist visits up to five patients a day, 365 days a year - a total of 1,800 patients.

Without this portable equipment, staff would not be able to provide an extended opthalmic assessment service and patients would need to be transferred to the BEH for examination. In some cases this may not be possible or it may not be in the best interest of patients.
