What we fund

We'll fund the little things that make a big difference going above and beyond to transform the experiences patients have in our hospitals, wherever the need is greatest. We fund the creation of welcoming, healing environments, innovative research, support staff training and development and provide world class technology and equipment.

Funding priorities:

  • The little things that make a big difference
  • Healing environments and spaces to provide dignity, privacy and empathy
  • Championing equitable access for everyone
  • World-class technology, treatments, knowledge, and research.

Find out more about what we fund.

Eligibility

To receive funding from Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity, your grant application must meet our three main eligibility criteria:

  • Whether the request falls within the charity’s funding priorities
  • Request is over and above what the NHS and/or Trust should provide
  • The request will pass the ‘public perception test’ – would the request be viewed as an appropriate use of charitable funds by the public or donors?

What we will not consider funding requests for:

  • Anything that is considered ‘core’ provision by the Trust/NHS – this is what is normally provided by the Trust/NHS as standard.  This could be waiting room chairs or equipment such as thermometers or shelving for stock, desks for staff, etc.
  • Retrospective funding requests
  • Requests for individual support for patients
  • Requests for training/education which is mandatory for staff
  • Replacement of equipment or items which are lost, damaged, etc.
  • Anything that would not pass the public perception test.
  • Individual vouchers for staff as leaving gifts, thank you gifts, prizes, etc.
  • Flowers for staff leaving, retiring, thank you, etc.
  • Laptops or any IT equipment enabling staff to work from home or to do their job unless it is part of a larger application for a previously non-existent new post – i.e. a pilot project.

If you would like to informally discuss an application, please get in touch with the grants team.

How to apply for a grant

BWHC Logo sunburst icon For grants worth less than £250

Please submit a small grant application form, signed by a fund advisor with receipts and invoices attached. Please use the guidelines to help you fill in this form. Please note: this form is only to completed where there is not already a grant approved. For a grant already approved, please submit a reimbursement of expenses form.

BWHC Logo sunburst icon For grants worth over £250

Please complete a grant application form for approval. There are two forms: one for projects and one for meetings, conferences, team-building events etc. These forms need to be signed by a Fund Advisor and include evidence of costs. Once approved, you will be given a Grant Application Number which needs to be included on any reimbursement of expenses claims or invoices.

In addition to approval from a fund advisor, these grants also require sign off from the Divisional Director and approval from CPSG. For queries regarding the CPSG approval process, please contact Kirsty Cepek, UHBW Head of Capital Accounting.

BWHC Logo sunburst icon For grants worth over £10,000

In addition to approval from a fund advisor, Divisional Director and CPSG, these grants also require approval from our Board of Trustees who meet six times a year. These grants can therefore take significantly longer to process.

Training, education and conference requests: interim arrangements

Please note: training, education and conference funding requests are currently undergoing review by Divisional Directors before being signed off for charity funding. This applies to all costs including those for which you might previously have been able to submit a reimbursement of expenses form for under £250.

Before paying out for any training (including study and away days), educational courses or conferences under £250, we would advise that you submit a Request for Funding to [email protected] which will be passed on for divisional consideration. Please ensure that you submit your Request for Funding Form at least four weeks before the event in order for us to be able to process your request.

We are currently able to fund UK based courses/events. You must adhere to any government guidelines relating to Covid-19. It is your responsibility to ensure that there is a clear refund policy.
