Each year Above & Beyond supports Nurse’s Day at UHBW, providing every member of nursing staff with a gesture of thanks.

The charity supports an event at the Trust celebrating nursing and midwifery practice, work, success and quality improvement work. As part of the celebrations, staff awards are presented and the charity funds a nursing scholarship for a research project at the Trust.

Carolyn Mills, former Chief Nurse at UHBW, told us last year: “Celebrating Nurses Day every May is a joyful and uplifting experience. The feedback from the staff is always overwhelmingly positive.

“The support from Above & Beyond has enabled us to fully recognise the amazing contribution our staff make in the care and treatment they give to patients and their families each and every day.

“From long service awards, recognition awards, scholarship opportunities, to poster competitions the day brings staff together to share their stories and celebrate their achievements.”

Dr Deb Marriage, Consultant Nurse in Allergy at Bristol Children's Hospital, received scholarship funding in 2019. She said: “The funding was pivotal for me to transform my idea for a study into an active project. The SPARTA Study (simulation-based parent training for the use of auto-injectors in anaphylaxis) aims to improve parents knowledge and confidence in administering an adrenaline autoinjector if their child should experience anaphylaxis.

“Child medical simulation manikins (practice dummies which can wheeze and talk) are often used in medical and nurse training for practising basic skills but have not been used before with parents. We would like to see if they would be useful for teaching parents and carers.”
