New period packs are available to patients on Apollo and Caterpillar Wards at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

A member of staff packs period products into tote bagsThe packs contain a range of products, including different sizes and absorbency, so that patients having periods can choose which is most appropriate for their needs.

Hayley Wiles, Benign Haematology Family Support Worker, said: "Some young patients who are admitted to hospital experience their period whilst as inpatients and may not have the items required due to having been admitted unexpectedly. Some are long-term inpatients and may experience their period for the first time whilst in hospital.

Previously, the hospital did not have appropriate sanitary products for the normal course of events and the staff feel helpless when unable to provide a simple solution.

"Staff feel that having these products available will reduce patients’ anxiety and embarrassment, as well as ensuring that those patients who are financially disadvantaged are able to access the products necessary."

This is initially a pilot project. Based on patient and staff feedback, we are hoping to provide further packs to Bristol Children's Hospital and across the Trust.
