Tracey Arthur, senior nurse at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, has been shortlisted in the national Hays Nurse of the Year competition.

Nurses from across the UK were nominated for the award by colleagues and the winner will be selected from a shortlist of three finalists via an online public vote throughout August.

Above & Beyond community fundraising officer Amy nominated Tracey to acknowledge her outstanding commitment to her patients and also the amazing fundraising and volunteering she does for the charity.

Earlier this year, Morgan, whose wife Elizabeth was cared for by Tracey, wrote this testimony:

“In 2013, my dear wife Elizabeth was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. She was admitted to Ward 62 of the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre for treatment.

"Tracey was the Ward sister and seeing her dedication to her work gave Elizabeth great comfort in the knowledge she was in safe hands.

"During Elizabeth’s treatment we came to know Tracey well. I was impressed, indeed touched, by her commitment to giving her patients the very best care. Not only did she care for her patients but also for the well-being of their nearest and dearest. Through her support my dear wife and family came to terms with the illness and its inevitability.

"I can recall one occasion when two new young nurses had arrived on the Ward and Tracey was briefing them not only on their clinical duties but also impressing on them the need for compassion and understanding. We felt that Tracey, and the rest of the staff on Ward 62, were like family to us.

"My wife sadly passed away after a long struggle against the disease – on Ward 62 “amongst people she knew and loved”, she said.

"I feel that Tracey greatly contributed to my wife being settled in her mind that all that could have been done for her had been done, allowing her to pass away peacefully.

"Tracey continues to support patients and families by raising funds for Above & Beyond and she deserves recognition for all the care, treatment, understanding, support and love she has given patients, their families and her staff over the years.”

The winner of the public vote will be given £1,000 for their charity of choice and the two other finalists will receive £500 for their chosen charities.
