Walkerbot appeal revolutionising stroke and neuro rehab at southmead hospital Every year, hundreds of people receiving care at Southmead Hospital face the long and challenging journey of learning to walk again after a stroke or other neurological condition. That's why Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity launched the Walkerbot Appeal – to fund a pioneering piece of rehabilitation technology that has the potential to transform recovery for patients across the South West. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, we have now reached our £428,000 fundraising target and are working towards bringing the Walkerbot to Southmead Hospital. The Walkerbot Appeal was launched by Southmead Hospital Charity before it merged with Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity in 2026. Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity is proud to continue supporting this project and sharing updates on its progress. What is the walkerbot? The Walkerbot, known as the LokomatPro Sensation, is a state-of-the-art robotic gait trainer that supports patients as they relearn how to walk. Using robotic technology and interactive exercises, it enables patients to take thousands of consistent, supported steps during a single rehabilitation session – far more than is possible through traditional therapy alone. For patients recovering from stroke and other neurological injuries, this can help improve mobility, build confidence and support greater independence. The technology also allows therapists to deliver highly intensive rehabilitation in a safe and effective way, helping more patients access the support they need. the difference it will make Southmead Hospital is home to one of the region's leading neuroscience and stroke services, caring for patients from across Bristol, North Somerset and the wider South West. The Walkerbot has the potential to transform rehabilitation by helping patients practise walking earlier, more often and for longer periods of time. For some people, this could be the difference between returning to independent living and relying on ongoing support from others. Once installed, Southmead Hospital will become only the second NHS hospital in the UK to offer this groundbreaking technology. Where are we now? We're delighted to have reached our fundraising target thanks to donations from individuals, businesses, charitable trusts and community fundraisers. The next stage is working with the manufacturer to finalise the purchase, delivery and installation of the equipment. These discussions are ongoing, and careful planning is required to ensure the Walkerbot can be safely integrated into the hospital's rehabilitation services.
