26th January 2024

Alongside the Mayor and Mayoress of Weston and the trustees from Race Equality North Somerset charity, we had the privilege of joining the Weston-super-Mare Association of Malayalees (WAM) for their Christmas and New Year celebrations on Saturday 6th January 2024.

Weston-super-Mare Association of Malayalees (WAM) is an organisation for Keralites who migrated and settled in Weston-super-Mare. Malayalees are named so as their mother tongue is Malayalam and are from the South Western state of Kerala, India.

Weston Mayor at the WAM eventWAM’s aim is to bring the Malayalee community together in the UK and to support in social education, recreation, and quality of life to individual members. One focus area is working closely as a community to support local charities and within the town’s association of Malayalees community group, over 70% work for our local hospitals in the Bristol and Weston area. They chose to support Bristol & Weston Hospitals Charity to give back to the local hospitals they’re incredibly passionate about working for.

Pious Pappachen, WAM president, said: “We conduct a charity fundraising event every year and this year we raised money through hosting a biriyani challenge. The executive Committee decided to prepare the food to raise maximum funds for charity this year. We took over 450 biriyani orders through WAM families and packed them individually, then made deliveries to each of their houses.

Megan Watts, Community Partnerships Officer, attended on behalf of the charity and said:

It was a real privilege to be able to attend on Saturday to be a part of the WAM’s celebrations. The day was filled with incredible traditional Kerala food dishes and a brilliant cultural programme filled with dancing and singing by talented children and adolescents, supported by their parents.

It was an absolute honour to be able to say HUGE thank you to the WAM community for their fundraising efforts and share the impact their donation will have for patients in our local hospitals. It really was a lovely day to join the celebrations and experience the full-hearted goodness of the WAM community. Thank you so much again.
