Lisa is a nurse at the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI). She signed up for the 2019 Bristol to Paris Cycle Challenge to push herself while raising money for a cause she cares about.

Self-funding the event left Lisa with time to concentrate on her training, knowing that any additional funds she raised would go straight to Above & Beyond.

Find out more about Lisa’s experience on the challenge – the best way to get excited is by hearing from someone who’s done it!

The Bristol to Paris Cycle Challenge was the perfect event for me – it was the right time of year with plenty of opportunity to train. It’s for everybody, with any type bike, as long as you come with lots of enthusiasm!

As a nurse at the BHI, I’m passionate about providing compassionate and high-quality care for patients.

There never ever seems to be enough money in the NHS pot to provide the complexities of care that patients need. There are so many domains that enhance patient care which can really make a positive difference, even the little things can alleviate anxieties and improve health and well-being.

I understand how valuable public funds are to the NHS and it helps a wide variety of projects – from heart scanners through to ward spaces to create a more calming atmosphere.

The cycle ride isn’t just for hospital staff, it’s a chance to bring together people who care about the NHS.

The logistics from start to finish were outstanding – you had nothing to worry about but getting on your bike and enjoying the day’s ride! I enjoyed the varied terrain, cycling through lush countryside and interesting, pretty villages.

Everyone had different abilities, but the ethos that ‘no-one gets left behind’ was prevalent, meaning you can just go out and have fun!

In the build-up to the challenge I signed up to Evans cycle events. They run regular rides with different routes and mileage. They are well-organised and signposted so it’s a great way to get the miles in!

You’re supported every step of the way – from signing up to getting to Paris. If you’re already signed up you’ll have a fantastic time. If not, what are you waiting for?!
