Help provide a safe, modern environment fit for 21st century care

Ward D603 cares for patients undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC). While wards across Bristol city centre hospitals have benefited from refurbishment in recent years, Ward D603 has not been updated since the 1970s.

The layout of multi-bed bays is poor and shared washing facilities offer very little privacy for patients. Dark and dated fixtures and fittings impact still further on patient experience. The environment in which cancer patients are treated no longer meets the demands of 21st century care.

Max's story

Max, 26, was treated for cancer in 2018. He underwent 12 rounds of chemotherapy, each requiring at least a two night stay on Ward D603, and spent more time on the ward as an inpatient. While Max received amazing medical care, he found the Ward itself was "depressing, dated and bleak".

"In the single rooms without an en-suite, you have to walk down the Ward to get to the bathroom which, when you’re not feeling very well, is hard. During times I was in a bay, I didn’t want to ask family members to visit because there’s no privacy and there’s nowhere to talk."

Increasing privacy and dignity for cancer patients

Your support will transform Ward D603 so that cancer patients are treated in a safe, modern environment to match the outstanding care they receive from staff.

A complete refurbishment of the ward will create a more welcoming environment, modernise layout and furnishings, and provide calm and private spaces to maintain dignity throughout treatment. Private spaces are essential to ensure that patients are comfortable when discussing their treatment with staff.

Patients, families and staff will benefit from:

New welcome desk with improved signage

Improved layout with a brighter interior

Modern fixtures and fittings

Calming artwork on the walls

A larger acute assessment unit with improved decor

En-suite facilities in all single rooms

    Support Ward D603 refurbishment

£1.3 million has already been raised by Above & Beyond supporters but there is still more to do to hit the £1.53 million target.

We know that the dedicated staff at BHOC are keen to get involved so we have created a special staff fundraising toolkit. Please click the following link for more information and to download the fundraising toolkit, or contact our hospital partnerships manager Amy on [email protected].
