Improving hospital environments and ensuring that clinical areas are more welcoming and comfortable for patients and families is an important aspect of our work. Sometimes a very small difference in environment can have a huge impact on the experience people have while in hospital.

In Bristol Royal Infirmary, Ward A522's previously plain day room, in which patients and visitors would watch TV, has been decorated with a bright wall covering which has transformed the way the room is used.

I get lots of positive feedback from patients, relatives and staff and they say the room has a real calming and relaxing effect.

Doctors regularly use the room to speak with family and patients use it to spend time with their relatives. Volunteers are also able to take patients in there and play cards, read books or just sit to have a cup of tea.
