A 99-year-old great-grandmother has completed a kayaking challenge to raise money for Bristol Children's Hospital.

Elaine Gray is raising money to say thank you for the care of her great-grandson Remy.

In March 2021, Remy had an 18-hour surgery at the hospital for a thrombosed aneurysm. He spent nine days in a high-dependency unit, then he was moved to Bluebell Ward before returning home to Devon.

His great-grandmother Elaine challenged herself to kayak round a course at Decoy Lake in Devon to raise money.

She said: “I was so impressed with the way the surgery was done on my little great-grandson that I thought I would like to try and raise some money for the hospital in gratitude.

“I’ve set a target of raising £500 and I’ve raised £800. I really enjoyed getting in my kayak again and seeing all my family cheering me on.”

Elaine’s challenge took place on Wednesday 13th July. She was joined by Remy and his dad in their own kayak on the lake.

Since his surgery Remy has returned to full-time education and is leading a full and active childhood.
