The Guinness World Record’s ‘”World’s greatest living explorer’ Sir Ranulph Fiennes has returned to Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) to meet the surgeon who saved his life.

Sir Ranulph was rushed to the heart hospital in 2003 where he had emergency double bypass surgery, performed by Professor Gianni Angelini.

On Friday (12 July), the explorer attended an event with Above & Beyond, where he spoke about his experience at the hospital and answered questions from the charity’s supporters.

Sir Ranulph said: “It was fantastic to see Professor Gianni again and meet some of Above & Beyond’s supporters.

“I heard about some of the incredible things the charity is doing at the BHI and it’s a pleasure to be able to support them.”

Above & Beyond is fundraising for the BHI to pay for world-class equipment, environments that provide a friendly and calm space, innovative research and staff training and development.

Sarah Pryer, head of philanthropy and partnerships at Above & Beyond, said: “We work very closely with the dedicated staff at the BHI to fund the areas of greatest need within the hospital.

“Whether that’s a calming and relaxing space for staff to speak to the families of patients, or the latest equipment to ensure patients are treated in the best way possible.

“I’d like to thank Sir Ranulph for visiting today and lending his support to the charity. It means a huge amount to everyone at Above & Beyond and our supporters.”
