Above & Beyond volunteer Ann Blight has joined Challenge Against Cancer - walking over 13 Bristol bridges and raising almost £300 for the charity.

Ann has been a volunteer with us for over six years. She said: "In March 2011, as an ex-patient I was invited to the Open Day at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) to see the refurbishment that had been carried out. I couldn’t believe the transformation since my treatment in 1987 and 1996. I was advised that this was funded by Above & Beyond, and I decided that when I retired I would become a volunteer for them to give something back for the wonderful care I had received."

Ann was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1987 before it returned in 1996. Her mother, brother and husband have all been treated at Bristol's hospitals.

She added: "Unfortunately in August this year I was diagnosed with low grade Lymphoma, which was very frustrating after 24 years from the time I finished treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, but I know I will receive the best care from the dedicated staff of BHOC, and I’ve no doubt I will get through this as I have everything else.

"It makes me feel very proud that I am supporting such a worthwhile charity in their Bristol Against Cancer campaign, and I would say this to the people of Bristol, if you can, please support the charity by volunteering or making a donation, however little it may be, as no-one knows when they or a member of their family will require the expertise of the Bristol hospitals.

"As a born and bred Bristolian, being a volunteer with like-minded people and sharing ideas to the benefit of the people of Bristol, makes me feel quite humble."
