A new wide-angle retinal camera has been funded thanks to supporters of Above & Beyond and Friends of Bristol Eye Hospital (FBEH).

The camera is especially for use on babies and is used to look at blood vessels behind the eye.

It takes images of the eye which are required for rapid and effective diagnosis in babies with sight-threatening illnesses, such as retinopathy of prematurity, or non-accidental head injuries.

The new camera is portable, meaning it can be used at Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH), St Michael's Hospital and in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Ten years ago, Above & Beyond and FBEH funded two cameras for Bristol Eye Hospital which have helped more than 1,000 babies.

While these cameras are still in use, the quality of images will be improved with the new equipment and the camera will have wider usage due to its portable nature.

Vivi Choleva, a consultant at BEH, said: "The new camera is much easier to transport between the hospitals and using high-quality photographs means it's easier to do a handover between staff members.

"As they say - a picture is worth a thousand words!"
