About us Your hospitals Bristol Heart Institute The Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) was opened in 2009 as a centre of excellence for cardiology care for local people and specialised cardiothoracic care for patients across the South West. The BHI is one of the leading research centres for cardiovascular disease in the UK and works closely with the University of Bristol to find new treatments for improved patient outcomes and care. The BHI building, designed by Bristol-based CODA Architects is award–winning, thanks to the innovative central open atrium, built to let in natural light and enhanced by artworks and indoor trees. This promotes patient well-being, creating an atmosphere of calm and healing in a space that feels less clinical than many hospitals. Did you know? It costs £17,928 a day to care for patients in the 24 bed cardiac intensive care unit. That’s over £6.5m a year Bristol Heart Institute treats 40,000 patients every year 1,327 heart surgeries and 5,964 cardiology lab procedures were performed in 2016 Every five minutes someone in the UK will have a heart attack.
